Many people will use chat apps such as Messenger and Skype for business interactions. Only about 10 years ago, email was the main focus, but with the advent of new technology, common sense in business is now changing.
"The world in front of us is not the norm right now." This is the author's "unchanged" belief. Born in Poland under the communist regime, he experienced the fall of the Berlin Wall and the catastrophic changes in social structure due to the end of the Cold War as a teenager. The influx of Western capitalism caused the companies and state-owned factories that had previously been responsible for local employment to go bankrupt, leaving many unemployed.
Change is coming suddenly. And that change is inevitable. That is why it is important to accept change and manage it. This seems to be the underlying theme of this book.
Although this book is called "Google style", it is actually "Piotr style" which digested Google style, and many methods based on the author's actual experience are introduced. Moreover, the author has lived in Japan for 17 years, so he is familiar with the situation in Japan. The examples in this book are all familiar to us and will be easy to understand.
Although this book is a kind of business book, it will be enjoyable for anyone who wants to "update themselves", whether it's a housewife, a student, or a retired person. Enjoy change and always learn. That is the first step to becoming a "successful person."
The main points of this book
This is an era of change. The "successful person" so far is not always the "successful person" in the future. From now on, "people who create new value" and "people who create the world they want to see" will lead the times.
Those who seize the opportunity are those who continue to learn. It is advisable to dare to seek learning opportunities in the work and to work on "work with low impact and much learning" as an investment to some extent.
Make decisions quickly and intuitively. That way you can act quickly and make decisions that are close to your values.
The definition of elite changes
Some graduates of the University of Tokyo and Harvard University have an elite family who have graduated from the same university for generations. Wealthy families invest generously in education and children go to famous universities. And after graduation, he becomes a lawyer or a doctor, a so-called typical elite.
But now, with AI and automation / outsourcing, the work we have done so far is changing rapidly. For example, to become a lawyer who is currently recognized as an elite profession, you must squeeze in existing legal knowledge and learn past case law, which can be automated by AI. Using the services of a major American software company, Symantec, it is possible to analyze 570,000 documents in two days. It is no longer a dimension that humans can compete with. Perhaps the job of a lawyer 10 years from now will be very different from what it is today.
In other words, just because you got on the current "elite course" is not safe. For that matter, even those who are out of it have a chance.
The important thing is to look ahead to future waves and create new ones yourself.
Create new value
At major Japanese companies, people in their late 20s to around 30 years old are selected as those who take the career advancement course and those who do not. Many employees are worried because they are excluded from the career advancement course.
But if you look at society, you'll find that today's successful companies, like Google, Facebook, Airbnb, and Uber, are "creating new industries." If you replace this with a career, the reason why the internal competition for career advancement is valuable is that the company happens to be stable and alive. If the entire company disappears, the effect disappears in an instant.
On the other hand, some people, even if they belong to a company, create jobs that only they can do and succeed in new businesses and in-house entrepreneurs. They are the people who can play an active role beyond the framework of a company.
Google has a 20% rule that says, "You can do whatever you want for 20% of your working hours." The app "Google Arts & Culture", which allows you to appreciate works of art from all over the world, is a service born from this rule. An environment where even Japanese companies can take on challenges should be in place, and whether or not they can create new value in that environment will be the key to future career advancement. In addition, looking outside the company or industry and creating various communities is also a weapon.
Create a "world you want to see"
Human resources who will lead the era have a solid vision of "I want to draw and see this kind of world." Then, in order to create the "world you want to see," you will seek out the mission that you should do and fulfill it.
The vision requires a strong will to realize it. As long as you have the energy, or passion, to realize your vision, your supporters will surely appear. If you have a vision, a mission, and a passion, you can be sure that you will get results.
And what is important in a new way of working is whether or not there is pride in the output at work. In addition, do you enjoy the process of producing output? If you don't feel that way right now, you should choose between revisiting the job or changing the job itself.
Keep learning and update yourself
Learn at work
Daily learning is essential to improve one's skills and productivity. However, the author recommends incorporating the element of "learning" into the work rather than taking an MBA.
Make your work a matrix of impact and learning. By the way, high impact means high value to be created in a certain period of time. Then, it will be divided into the following four.
(1) High-impact work with a lot of learning
(2) High-impact work with little learning
(3) Jobs with low impact and much learning
(4) Jobs with low impact and little learning
First of all, (1) is, needless to say, the most important work. Regarding (2), it is wise to get the help of someone other than yourself as much as possible. In (4), the number of cases of substituting work by utilizing outsourcing and technology will increase in the future. Finally, (3) "Jobs with low impact and a lot of learning" can be done as an investment. Ideally, we should work at a certain rate to lay the foundation for the future, and eventually raise it to new core competencies.
Meeting successful people is the shortcut to success
If you want to learn business, meeting people who are successful in business is the fastest way. Learn from professionals on the road and put it into practice. This is the most efficient way to study.
The author says that when trying to learn from others, the conversation is similar to an interview. We will delve into various questions such as the reason for starting a business, the experience of childhood and youth, values, beliefs, missions, setbacks, and so on.
"Who you interact with" has a great influence on the growth of the person. Studies show that if you have a fat person around you, you tend to get fat before you know it. In other words, if you are in contact with successful people on a regular basis, you are more likely to succeed. That is why I want you to value meeting successful people. First of all, don't miss the chance to meet.
So how do you seize that opportunity? The author says, "Tokyo is small. The industry is small." There are events in every industry where peers gather, and there are plenty of opportunities in Tokyo on a daily basis. Even if you take a day off from work, it makes sense to take part in those opportunities.
Learning to solve problems
Again, the era of "If you enter a good university and get a job at a good company, you will be safe" is over. From now on, rather than getting a qualification such as "graduate of Tokyo University", studying to bring new value to the world will be required.
Now, the mechanism to solve various problems in the world is created by private companies ahead of the government and administration. For example, American electric vehicle company Tesla's Elon Musk has founded SpaceX, a private space venture. Until now, space development projects were mainly national (NASA in the United States). However, since 2006, the two have formed a cooperative relationship, and SpaceX has been developing rockets and spacecraft at the request of NASA. SpaceX announced in 2017 that it had succeeded in reusing the rocket recovered after launch. This has made it possible to significantly reduce costs. SpaceX is now making more innovative rockets than NASA.
From now on, solving problems in the world will drive the progress of humankind. Naturally, learning for that purpose will become mainstream, and the title of being an employee of a famous university or a major company will become less and less valuable, and learning to obtain the title will also rapidly lose its value.
Make an intuitive decision
The speed of decision determines the outcome
In an era of rapid change, the speed of decisions can make a big difference.
The first advantage of making intuitive decisions is that you can act quickly. In many situations, quick action can produce great results and move quickly to the next stage.
The second advantage is that you can make decisions that are close to your own values. What do you really want? You should understand intuition rather than thinking logically.
However, big decisions such as changing jobs, starting a business, and getting married cannot be intuitively made immediately. The author also waits until the last minute to gather information when making important decisions such as whether to receive a big job. Analyze your choices based on your intuitive choices. Immediately before making the final decision, it is likely that definitive information or inspiration will occur.
However, if I keep getting lost, I can't move forward forever. Therefore, be sure to set a deadline to "make a conclusion by ○ day". Think so seriously and make a decision in a calm situation at the end.
Important "feedback" after making a decision
After making an intuitive decision, it's important to always look for "evidence to support your mistakes." When a person makes an intuitive decision, he immediately tries to justify his decision.
If you find that your intuition is wrong, you can go back and start over. That way, you'll be less likely to make mistakes and you'll be on the right track.
And feedback is essential when fixing mistakes. Feedback is "listening to people's advice." It's a good idea to ask for advice, such as "What do you think about these problems?"
Even when people praise you, instead of ending with "Thank you, I'm glad", you can get information that will lead to growth by specifically asking "What do you think was good?" If you ask positively and constructively, such as "Please tell us what you like about this job," you should get a positive answer.
Meetings and team building are calculated back from the output
Team members are not fixed
Most people in the Japanese workplace understand that a "team" is a fixed group within the workplace. But for the author, who has a number of Google-experienced projects in mind, a team means a highly liquid community. This community is born at the start of the project and disappears at the end of the project. In this way, leaders will be required to bring experts into teams and achieve results in non-specialized fields.
Communication failure in these projects is a life-and-death problem. At the time of the meeting, it is better to think first about what level you want to communicate with and what kind of output you want to get. Internet meetings sometimes end up just confirming the information, so if necessary, you should spend time and money in person to meet in person. Even in the actual progress of the meeting, clarify the goal first. It is easier to get results if you take the method of presenting specific materials and seeking opinions and advice.
"Leadership" is the "skill" that all members should have
Leadership is not a title, it is a skill that all members should have. This is because as the team becomes more fluid, so does the leader.
Also, increasing automation in the office will increase the value of skills that improve the work process itself. The person who can do so is the leader, and the act of working in that way is leadership. It can be said that leadership is the ability to set output goals and manage projects for that purpose.
At Google, we analyze the results of surveys when more than 10,000 employees participate in the project, and derive a leader image that enhances the performance of the organization. According to it, it is important as a leader to be able to create a place for the team, maximize the potential of each person and produce results / create constructive relationships with the people around them. That's right.
Recommendation of reading
This summary summarizes the first four of the six chapters. The remaining two chapters describe how to prepare the mind and body to obtain good performance and how to develop human resources, and are packed with contents that can be utilized in daily work. Please read the whole book and try to incorporate the Piotr style method.
